The “Why?” of AI Art (or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Robot Picasso)

Ah, Artificial Intelligence (AI)—the gift that keeps on giving, especially in the realm of art because who needs human creativity when you can have a silicon chip spit out masterpieces? AI-generated art is here to challenge everything we thought we knew about creativity and authorship. It’s like giving a typewriter to a monkey, but instead of Shakespeare, you get surrealist nightmare fuel that would make Salvador Dalí scratch his head. This unholy union of ones and zeros with paintbrushes allows for the exploration of themes and styles in ways that are limited only by the imagination of the AI and its human overlords—I mean, collaborators. As Halloween creeps closer, the eerie and otherworldly potential of AI art becomes particularly intriguing. After all, nothing says “spooky” quite like art created by an entity that doesn’t have a soul, right?

The Anatomy of a Good AI Art Prompt (or: How to Speak Robot and Get Pretty Pictures)

Creating compelling AI art prompts is all about balance. Be specific enough to guide the AI, but vague enough to allow creativity. For Halloween themes, set spooky scenes or invoke classic horror motifs. Instead of “a haunted house,” try “a decrepit Victorian mansion shrouded in thick mist, with windows glowing like nuclear waste.” This level of detail generates nuanced, visually interesting outputs. Don’t forget to experiment with art styles – a cubist witch’s cauldron can be a unique Halloween twist. Using platforms like Nightcafe Studio, we can bring these spooky visions to life with carefully chosen words.

Prompt Examples and Results

1. Haunted Victorian House

Here is my first prompt.

Double exposure of a haunted Victorian house overlaid with a ghostly figure peering out of a window, with an eerie green fog swirling around the house, gothic horror, chilling atmosphere

Now when you use Dall-E 3 on NightCafe, it will automatically revise your prompt. It does this in order to add more detail and for safety reasons. You can toggle the “minimize prompt revision” button if you would rather your prompt stay close to the prompt that you wrote.

Here is the revised prompt:

Create a double exposure image presenting a haunted Victorian-style house. Combine this with a translucent visual of a spectral figure seemingly peering from a window. Surround the scene with an eerie green fog for added macabre. The style of this artwork should evoke feelings of gothic horror, instilling a chilling atmosphere.

2. Gothic Mansion and Jack-o’-lantern

This next one is a double exposure image as well. Again, I used Dall-E 3. Here is the prompt I typed.

A spooky, double exposure, gothic mansion superimposed on a glowing jack-o’-lantern

And here is the prompt once it was run through ChatGPT.

Visualize a spooky scene that showcases double exposure photography. The primary subject is a gothic mansion with its daunting features and towering spires. Superimpose this image on a glowing jack-o’-lantern that casts a mesmerizingly eerie light. The jack-o’-lantern should showcase the quintessential Halloween character with carved eyes and a creepy grin. The overall tone should illuminate with a distinctive spectral quality echoing the essence of a spine-chilling autumn night

3. Decrepit Victorian Mansion

Again I used Dall E-3 for this next one.

Here is the prompt.

a decrepit Victorian mansion that looks like it’s been through a blender, shrouded in mist so thick you could cut it with a knife, with windows glowing like they’re powered by nuclear waste

and here the prompt is after being revised.

Picture a dilapidated Victorian mansion, exhibiting features as though it has been harshly blended and distorted. Its architectural beauty swallowed by a dense, seemingly tangible fog, so think it is as though one could slice it with a sharp knife. This eerie scene is further intensified by the mansion’s windows, emanating an uncanny, toxic glow, as if illuminated from within by nuclear waste.

4. Cubist Witches’ Cauldron

This next one is a little bit different. For this one I used the Dreamshaper XL Lightning model. I turned off prompt magic so there is no revised prompt. Here it is.

a witches cauldron with witches dancing around it, cubist painting, Neo-Cubism, layered overlapping geometry, art deco painting, Dribbble, geometric fauvism, layered geometric vector art, maximalism cubist painting, Neo-Cubism, layered overlapping geometry, art deco painting, geometric fauvism, layered geometric vector art, maximalism; V-Ray, Unreal Engine 5, angular oil painting

5. Creepy Porcelain Doll

For this one, I decided to use the Flux Model with a lora add-on. The lora model that I used is called “Morbid” by the NightCafe User Adansito.

Here is the prompt:

A porcelain doll with glowing red eye sitting on a swing set in a desolate, fog-choked graveyard. Art Deco style, eerie and unsettling

6. Spectral Figure from TV

For this next image I used a different Lora addon model called “Halloween Ghosts” which this model was created by NightCafe user Budgie. Here is the prompt I used:

A spectral figure with elongated limbs and a melting face reaching out from a static-filled television screen. Analog horror, glitch art, unsettling atmosphere.

7. Menacing Jack-o’-lantern: With and Without Prompt Magic

For the next images, I am going to show you the image without “Prompt Magic” toggled on, and then the image after I have enabled Prompt Magic. I just want to show you how great this little feature is. Here is the prompt that I wrote,

A menacing jack-o’-lantern with a carved, demonic grin, illuminated by an eerie green light. Foreboding symbol, Halloween night, evil spirits.

And here is the image for this prompt:

I like how it turned out. It followed my prompt for the most part and it is kinda creepy, but then I enabled Prompt Magic and this is what It gave me:

Dark fantasy art. Close-up. A menacing jack-o’-lantern with a carved, demonic grin. Dramatic lighting. Ominous, eerie green glow emanating from within. Shadows cast on surrounding environment. Carved, twisted vines surrounding the pumpkin. Fiery, hellish colors. High contrast, bold shadows. Foreboding atmosphere. Spooky, mystical, evil, ominous, haunting, dark, mystical, supernatural, horror, eerie, green light, shadows, bold, dramatic, high contrast, bold colors

You can see how much more detail the prompt has in it. I feel like the image adhered to the prompt pretty well with this one to, but the image is much more detailed as well. You can see a great difference.
